A Very special NEW Release Titled "Honouring the 91st" was released on Sunday 29th May 2011 with veterans of the 91st Heavy Bomber Group in attendance.

About the painting

"Honouring the 91st" by Artist Steve Harper

This beautiful painting "Honouring the 91" by noted Artist Steve Harper depicts one of the worlds most famous and iconic WW2 Aircraft, the "Memphis Belle", a Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress, standing in front of her war time home at Bassingbourn control tower.

As you gaze into the painting you can almost hear the spanners click and the excited banter of the young engineers of the 91st Bomber group working on the aircraft before her final combat mission, that would lead to her safe return and ultimately bring her fame.

Look closely at the picture and you will see in the skies above, another B17 in flight "Man O War" Lost on 30th July 1943. Artist Steve Harper portrays the stark contrast between the two aircraft which serve as a poignant reminder that over a quarter of a million aircraft fought for survival over Europe in those dark days, and nearly 200,000 aircrew lost their lives to give us the freedoms we sometimes take for granted today.

This very special painting was unveiled in honour of the 91st Heavy Bomber Group, at the Control Tower Museum in a private unveiling at Bassingbourn on 29th May 2011.

The painting Honours the 91st Heavy Bomber group and indeed all those who paid the ultimate price in the greatest airborne conflict in history.

Artist Steve Harper says:

" As I put brush to canvas and pen to paper to Honour the 91st, both poem and painting become inseparable .

Look behind the figure in the middle of the painting and you will see a closed book symbolising the closing of a chapter in history and indeed the opening of a new one.

My roll as an artist is to tell the story. With each brush stroke the artist paints a little of his own soul into the painting. Not often in our lives can we say that we close a chapter in history, but as I unveil the painting in honour of those who fell on a foreign field never to return to their loved ones, or the veterans now in their senior years who remember events of their younger years and those who never came home, I captured the spirit of their youth and their desperate struggle for freedom against the tyranny of the dark clouds of war.

Now on canvas we see them for ever young, so that generations in years to come can look into the painting remember them. As I closes one chapter in history with brush and canvas, we can look back and honour those who gave so much, A New chapter opens that we can look forward to a brighter future with hope in our hearts.

My story is now inextricably interlinked with the "Memphis Belle" the wonderful people at the Tower Museum Bassingbourn who's dedication protects the historic listed building and museum for future generations, both the young and not so young, to enjoy and learn from our valuable heritage.

But above all those young men full of life and energy in war time England, Now senior of years and slightly more frail but with memories bright, who remember the friends who never came home to their waiting families, those who now sleep in a foreign field.

As I put brush to Canvas a British artist extends a hand of friendship across the Atlantic, as we look into a story told on canvas by the artist's hand."

"Honouring the 91st"

"May painting and poem bring you peace and a moment of quiet reflection."

My best wishes to you all

Steve Harper
